The soundtrack album for Disney's Western-themed animated film HOME ON THE RANGE is split down the middle between songs and orchestrated instrumentals, all the music composed by Alan Menken. The common thread between the two is that, in a refreshing change of pace from many contemporaneous soundtracks, the feel is more like that of a classic musical a la OKLAHOMA, with full, rich orchestrations instead of crass pop production. On the song side (with lyrics provided by Glenn Slater), K.D. Lang offers the jaunty Western-swing tune "Little Patch of Heaven." Film voice Randy Quaid shows off his yodeling chops on the giddy, onomatopoeic "Yodel-Adle-Eedle-Idle-Oo." Perhaps the most affecting song is the sad, simple ballad "Will the Sun Ever Shine Again," sung by Bonnie Raitt. The Beu Sisters change the pace with a full-on modern pop take on "Anytime You Need a Friend," but after a passel of instrumentals, Menken himself closes the album by singing a solo-piano version of the same tune.
