A good friend of mine summed it up really well when he said "The Hellacopters don't have an original bone in their body, but man, they rock like f*ck." And for my money, that's one of the best things about 'em; sounding as if they passed through a time warp that took them from Detroit's Grande Ballroom in 1969 to somewhere in Sweden in the mid-'90s (with a side trip through Australia to pick up some tips from Angus Young and Deniz Tek), the Hellacopters aren't here to reinvent rock & roll as we know it -- they just wanna play it loud, hard, and wild, just as it was meant to be. And what do you know, that's just what they do. Cream of the Crap!, Vol. 2 is their second collection of single sides, covers, compilation contributions, and collaborations with likeminded rock demons, and it cranks with abandon from first track to last. While the Hellacopters show excellent taste by covering the likes of Love, the Dictators, the Dead Boys, and the Misfits, their originals punch every bit as hard, and cuts like "Geekstreak," "(It's Not A) Long Way Down," and "Lowdown" would have earned an honored place on the albums of most self-respecting hard rock bands. The guys also back up Detroit rock legend Scott Morgan on two cuts, and the results sound like a marriage made in heaven, a sublime mixture of soul and muscle. In short, if you wanna rock on out, this disc will fill the bill, and if you don't, the Hellacopters wouldn't want anything to do with you anyway. Play this loud...as if you could spin it any other way. ~ Mark Deming|
