Liner Note Author: David Wells . With his second lineup of Modern Lovers, Jonathan Richman truly does rock & roll. But they do it their way, which, in Richman's case, means minimalist arrangements that stress casually effervescent vocal call-and-response, and songs that evoke summer, ice cream, bugs, and romance. There are stops in South America and the group even scored a British hit with "Egyptian Reggae." The sound is equal parts '50s vocal group and heart-on-their sleeve romantic innocence. The synthesis works because the songs are solid structures accompanied by playing which is that of a band whose members are truly in sync with one another. Richman's songs use the simplest components, lyrically and musically, but they create a sum total rich with honest conviction. And they really rock, albeit quietly.
