If you want to absorb the live experience of mid-period Hooker, you could do a lot worse than THE CREAM. Accompanied by a ragged-but-right band smart enough to stay out of his way, the blues legend exerts his indomitable spirit over a dozen lengthy cuts. Hooker was already an icon twice over by the time of this 1977 California concert, but his work ethic could never allow him to coast. In his patented slow, determined way, he invests each song with subtle but powerful energy, his voice still showing little sign of age and his guitar fiery and succinct as ever. Tempos and feels are relatively varied, but Hooker closes in the grand style, with his trademark boogie groove on "Boogie On." Hooker is best experienced solo, but the workman-like band is sympathetic, and THE CREAM rises to the top of his late-'70s albums.
