Mark Isham's score for Philip Kaufman's serial killer thriller Twisted is a competent but not especially distinctive set of compositions that rattle, clank, and brood effectively, and a bit too predictably. To Isham's credit, the score isn't overblown; "The City," one of its most musical tracks, opens the score with a restrained brass motif that is spare and tense as well as melodic. However, the track also introduces the rattling percussion that dominates the rest of the score, particularly on "I'm My Own Best Suspect" as well as "Nightmares" and "The Docks," both of which come across as a little too calculated to make the audience jump. "The Box," "Blackout," and "An Old Flame" feature the strings, vibes, and guitars that give the score a little more color. But for the most part, Twisted is based on percussion-based atmospherics that work well in the movie but make for somewhat dull listening outside of that context.
