An outstanding two-disc compilation focusing on Cher's solo work from the 1970s and early '80s, THE WAY OF LOVE: THE CHER COLLECTION won't suit the casual fan wanting a single-disc overview, but, for the true devotee, it's a gem. All of the big '70s hits are here, along with early solo singles (a lush rendition of "Bang Bang [My Baby Shot Me Down])," later notables (the underrated disco-era track "Take Me Home"), and songs with Sonny (the two best-known, "I Got You Babe" and "The Beat Goes On," are live recordings). The set also includes a number of rare and previously unreleased tracks, increasing its utility for the diehards. Neophytes, however, might be happier with the career-spanning 2003 release THE VERY BEST OF CHER, which focuses more on 1990s hits, including "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "Believe." THE WAY OF LOVE: THE CHER COLLECTION is for the advanced Cher fan.
