One of the most amazingly unorthodox releases of 1995, Just Another Day successfully unites West Coast gangsta rap with classic 1970s soul. It may seem an unlikely combination, but in fact, G.A.T. (whose name stands for Gangstas & Thugs) really does bridge the gap between N.W.A. and groups like the Dramatics, the OJays and the Chi-Lites on this dynamic CD. One minute, this L.A. group is delivering the silkiest, smoothest and most romantic of soul singing, and the next, are rapping about the horrors of gang warfare, Black-on-Black crime and incarceration. And the whole thing sounds organic and natural, never forced or contrived. A similar approach had been taken by the group D.R.S. in 1993, but G.A.T. clearly has a vision and style of its own. ~ Alex Henderson
