The idea behind the Rewind series is a simple one: take artists, producers, and bands working within the general category of electronic dance music and set them loose on songs that inspired them as they were coming up. The resulting juxtapositions are sometimes jarring but almost always lots of fun. Witness, for example, This Kid Named Miles' electro-ska arrangement of the Johnny Cash staple "Ring of Fire" or Swag's punchy rendition of the obscure Riuchi Sakamoto composition "Riot in Lagos" or Jeremy Ellis' respectful adaptation of Herbie Hancock's funky "Chameleon." There are other charmingly unlikely pairings, like Damon Aaron taking on Gil Scott-Heron and Nobody covering the Monkees. But the compilers saved the best for the last track, on which the up-and-coming electronica artist Bing Ji Ling takes AC/DC's "All Night Long" and gives it the Casiotone-and-clavinet treatment, complete with multi-tracked, soul-man falsetto. Yeah, baby. It's worth pointing out that none of these tracks are remixes or edits of the originals, and more than half are exclusives or previously unreleased. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
