This is not Junior Parker's best material, nor is it his best-known. That said, it's pretty good all the same. Parker was on Mercury, then their subsidiary, Blue Rock, in the second half of the '60s, and throughout he recorded elegant but rollicking soul-blues -- very similar to what he did at Duke, but a little smoother, with a little heavier accent on the blues and with material that wasn't quite as good. Despite all this, Junior Parker reminded a consummate, elegant performer, backed by a professional band, and this is all very enjoyable, and certainly the first place to go after absorbing the Duke material. But it should be heard after the Duke material all the same. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
