Since he'd been working in similar territory as early as 1971's Histoire de Melody Nelson, the minimalist funk and heavy grooves of reggae suited Serge Gainsbourg quite well. Aux Armes et Cætera was recorded entirely in Kingston, Jamaica, with the one-two-three-four punch of bassist Robbie Shakespeare, drummer Sly Dunbar, organist Ansel Collins, and the I-Threes (Marcia Griffiths, Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt) on backing vocals. Though French pop aficionados won't find too many melodies to cling to here, and many of the songs are a bit stillborn, the production is crisp and delicious. Gainsbourg's saucy wit is in evidence as well on the tracks "Vieille Canaille (You Rascal You)" and "Relax Baby Be Cool." ~ John Bush|
