Released in the U.K. in 2004 (and in the U.S. two years later), the Scott Walker box set, IN FIVE EASY PIECES, displays a sly sense of humor (there's nothing "easy" about even his most accessible material) and a fascinating, though sometimes frustrating, theme-based sequence. This non-chronological approach makes room for a wide range of tracks by the revered British-based avant-pop crooner, from his mid-1960s era with the Walker Brothers (the ominous, organ-laden "Archangel") to his heralded late-'60s solo outings (the jazzy, pensive "Time Operator" and the delicate, lilting "Copenhagen") to his challenging and abstract '80s/'90s work (the eerie "River of Blood"). While those unfamiliar with Walker's dramatic and utterly unique aesthetic should start with the excellent BOY CHILD collection, diehard fans will enjoy delving into the strange, and often dark, corners of this remarkably thorough five-disc anthology.
