This was set to be an important album for Rickie Lee Jones from the get-go. She had released only two albums of original material in the 1990s, with a six-year gap between the last one and EVENING OF MY BEST DAY. Also, this was her first album for V2 after a live album and a covers disc on Artemis. Fans may rest easy in the knowledge that Jones didn't drop the ball at this crucial juncture; in fact, she runs with it and spikes it in the end zone.
This is a solid set of songs with imaginatively affecting arrangements, showcasing Jones's freewheeling style in its best light. The minor-key folkish ballad "Sailor Song" rubs shoulders with the gospel-flavored protest song "Tell Somebody," whose parenthetical title "Repeal the Patriot Act" leaves little room for ambiguity. The chamber-music art song "A Tree on Allenford" shares space with the bluesy stomp of "Mink Coat at the Bus Stop," and the whole thing hangs together in an exceedingly coherent fashion. It makes you think there's something to be said for longevity.
