Full title: Give A Monkey A Brain...And He'll Swear He's The Center Of The Universe.
Fishbone: Angelo Moore, Christopher Dowd, Walter A. Kibby II, John Norwood Fisher, Kendall Rey Jones, D. Fish, John Bigham.
Additional personnel: Branford Marsalis (saxophone); Billy "Bass" Nelson, Vicki Calhoun, Kristen Vigard, Aklia Chin (background vocals).
With GIVE A MONKEY A BRAIN...AND HE'LL SWEAR HE'S THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE, Fishbone have taken their heady blend of ska, reggae, jazz, funk, hip-hop and hard rock right to the metallic tip of hardcore urgency. And while there were always edgy metallic elements on the periphery of Fishbone's work, since the release of TRUTH AND SOUL they've been leaning in more of a hard rock direction. On GIVE A MONKEY A BRAIN... they've chosen to bring it front and center, allowing guitarist Kendall Jones to stretch his wings a bit, to particular effect on the power-chord encrusted "Swim" and "End The Reign," and the anthemic "Servitude" and "Black Flowers."
Despite their new hard rock flavor, they haven't abandoned their giddy humor or the buoyant, offbeat urban funk of past Fishbone releases. Tunes like "Nutt Megalomaniac" and "The Warmth Of Your Breath" illustrate Fishbone's infectious brand of hard rock funk and hyper-ska delirium. And rather than trying to shoehorn their style into a junk food pop context, Fishbone is content to let listeners nibble on selected tidbits of sonic onslaught from their soul buffet. GIVE A MONKEY A BRAIN might just be their breakthrough into the outer fringes of the mainstream.
