THE HELLSTROM CHRONICLE is a startling docudrama about the earth being overtaken by giant insects. Lalo Schifrin, known for his daring scoring choices and chilling attention to atmosphere, brings this film to life with wondrous textures and frightening vividness. Embracing unconventional timbres, Schifrin uses the Prokofiev PETER AND THE WOLF approach to animating characters in creating an aural backdrop to the fascinating life of insects. The score is invaded by odd percussion devices, string plucks, and woodwind twills, which all enhance the adventure as well as the skin-crawling nature of the subject matter. Although the film is allegedly a warning directed toward humanity, Schifrin's score is a celebration of innovation, skill, and musical brilliance.
