Digitally remastered by Randy LeRoy (Final Stage, Nashville, Tennessee). This is part of Lucky Dog's Pick Of The Litter reissue series. This was Dave Alvin's first solo album after departing the group he founded with his brother Phil, The Blasters, followed by a brief stint in X. The material here stays close to the rootsy terrain of The Blasters, and he even revisits "Long White Cadillac" and "Border Radio" (as well as "Fourth of July" which X recorded on their SEE HOW WE ARE). While Dave was the writer and guitarist for The Blasters, he left vocal duties to his brother's textured, R&B-inflected voice. Dave's vocals are well suited to his own material however, and he manages in his singing to embrace a sort of working class ethos, complete with the barbs with bad breaks and closely held hopes. Produced by Los Lobos saxophonist (and one-time Blaster) Steve Berlin, the arrangements are rife with no-frills punchiness.
