Billy Joe Shaver's initial blush of fame came in the mid '70s, when he was christened the poet laureate of outlaw country, and his songs were covered by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. In 1993, he found new fame along with his guitar-playing son Eddie under the group name Shaver, but at the time of this 1987 recording Billy Joe's fame had ebbed considerably. Lucky Dog Records is to be commended for rescuing this album from the dustbin of history, as it's easily the equal of Shaver's classic '70s albums. On "Hardworkin' Man" and "Manual Labor," Shaver underlines his working-class roots in a manner that would make Merle Haggard proud. "Hill Country Love Song" shows that for all his rough-and-rowdy leanings, Shaver was always capable of turning out a poignant ballad. Shaver's signature tune "Black Rose" is reprised here under the title "The Devil Made Me Do it the First Time." Perhaps most impressive is the way Shaver writes honestly and unpretentiously about his faith--as on the churning, gritty "You Can't Beat Jesus Christ"--without ever descending into cliche or proselytizing. SALT OF THE EARTH makes it clear that Shaver was never at a loss for a great song.
