This repackaging contains highlights from a vintage live Kingfish show at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on April 3, 1976. The initial incarnation of the band included the talents of Bob Weir (guitar/vocals), Matthew Kelly (guitar/harmonica/vocals), Dave Torbert (bass/vocals), Robbie Hoddinott (guitar), and Chris Herold (drums). They were touring in support of their self-titled debut, Kingfish (1976), issued only weeks earlier and from which a healthy dose of the play list is derived. Initially, the combo centered around Weir's considerable contributions during the Grateful Dead's self-imposed sabbatical circa 1975 and 1976. With him came worthy material such as the "Lazy Lightning"/"Supplication" medley. Notably, the Grateful Dead would also perform the coupling for several years upon their resurrection. The covers of Chuck Berry's "Around and Around" as well as "Promised Land," the traditional "C.C. Rider," and "One More Saturday Night" were likewise lifted from the Grateful Dead's expansive repertoire. Despite Weir's prominence in this particular lineup, the vast majority of the originals would come from the Kelly/Torbert camp. "Goodbye Your Honor" and "Home To Dixie" stand out as containing prime examples of the remarkably tight, triple-electric guitar and punchy bar band sound that Kingfish became synonymous with. Although most of his efforts would be replaced, Weir lent his talents to Live N Kickin (1978), which is actually closer in overall vibe to Greatest Hits Live (2003). This comes as no surprise since both are concert recordings and contain well over half of the same running order. Interested parties wanting to hear a more complete account of this show should direct their attention toward King Biscuit Flower Hour (1996), the two-CD version of the proceedings. ~ Lindsay Planer
