Original Sound Version is the beyond-complete retrospective of Discordance Axis' early years. It contains their debut album, Ulterior, along with the contents of their out of print split releases with Capitalist Casualties, Cosmic Curse, and Hellchild, plus demos, live recordings, and unreleased studio tracks. There are 69 tracks in all; however, one of those is a live recording that actually contains 16 separate songs, bumping the total number of songs up into the mid-eighties. Musically, this is grindcore in the biblical sense of the term: fast, abrasive, stripped down, and political, with lyrics (reproduced in the liner notes) that are often poetic, but never actually comprehensible due to vocalist Jon Chang's growling-and-shrieking vocal style. The sound quality varies, ranging from very good (although nothing here is as fancy sounding as 2000's The Inalienable Dreamless) to very lo-fi. Some of the highlights include a batch of unreleased studio tracks recorded for the 1993 Hellchild split, their humorous cover of Black Flag's "Gimme Gimme Gimme," and the songs from the Cosmic Curse split, which have the best recording quality of anything on here. On the other hand, some of the live tracks, as well as the recording of the band's first rehearsal, are pretty much here for historical purposes only. In keeping with Discordance Axis' high standards, the artwork and layout are classy and top-notch, and the extensive liner notes are another bonus, featuring song-by-song commentary by Chang as well as accounts of their early recordings and their 1995 tour of Japan. Talking about their song "Dystopia, Pt. 2," Chang writes, "The one song no grindcore band can be without: the one second song. An institution as precious as life itself." For grindcore fans, the stuffed-to-the-gills, 60-track discography CD is another precious tradition, and as such, this compilation is probably a must for any DA fan -- although newcomers are better off starting with the more concise Inalienable Dreamless or Jouhou before diving into this sprawling collection. ~ William York
