Though many performers' chart positions are often, to their detractors, undeserved, some artists have unquestionably earned their success. Such an entity is the Colorado jam band the String Cheese Incident, who for a decade previous to UNTYING THE NOT's release had, in the manner of their obvious inspiration, the Grateful Dead, relentlessly toured the country building a loyal fan base. Their first studio album since 2001's OUTSIDE INSIDE highlights the band's pristine sound, while adding a few subtle cutting edge touches courtesy of producer Youth, who seems ideally suited to reconciling the band's combination of soulful lyrics, folk-pop flourishes, and impeccable musicianship. The former is best displayed in the neo-psychedelic textures of "Who Am I?," while the latter finds its expression in the incendiary picking contained in "Valley of the Jig." UNTYING THE NOT demonstrates that the String Cheese Incident is just as creatively at home in the confines of a recording studio as it is in full improvisational flight on stage.
