The Vee Jay catalog has been the subject of numerous box sets, but Vee Jay Records: Chicago Hit Factory must be the most compact: The four discs and 40-page booklet fit into a box smaller than a double-CD jewel case. As an early and influential black-owned record label, Vee Jay often draws comparisons to Motown, but unlike Motown, Vee Jay had a less identifiable sound. The box set spans the lifetime of the label, from the Spaniels' 1953 hit "Baby, It's You" to Little Richard's 1965 hit "I Don't Know What You've Got but It Got Me." The anthology compiles most of the label's big hits, but doesn't confine itself to hit singles or black artists, the latter of which comprised the majority of Vee Jay's roster. As a result, Hoyt Axton and Ray Smith are represented along with the expected blues, gospel, R&B, and doo wop acts. The occasional oddity, such as a regional Latino recording by Victorio Valdez and a political comedy record by the Delegates, demonstrates Vee Jay's willingness to take a chance on material off their beaten path. The set's generous track list and low price are competitive with the box sets that appear on public domain labels such as Proper, even though Vee Jay Records: Chicago Hit Factory is an officially licensed product. ~ Greg Adams
