For his entry in DMC's BACK TO MINE series, trip-hop godfather Tricky--whose strung-out beats and smoke-damaged vocals are quintessential late-night-mix material--decides to abandon chill-out DJ stylings in favor of a more eclectic selection. Things kick off with the Cure's "Lullaby" seamlessly flowing into Radanna's "How We Ride" (replete with a whispered Tricky vocal), which then keeps rolling right into an old-school Eric B. & Rakim rap ("My Melody"). After that, the bad boy of Bristol mixes disparate tracks by Dr. John, Morphine, the Buzzcocks, Le Tigre, and Kate Bush, along with songs by his proteges Costanza and Liz Densmore, for an effect that's strikingly dynamic. The mix is great throughout, and Tricky's choices and sequencing are always inspired, as best exemplified by the presence of "My Funny Valentine" towards the end of the album, with Chet Baker crooning in the midst of more modern tunes as if he's suspended in time.
