The second volume in the After Hours series digs so deep into the Warner and Atlantic vaults, it's rediscovering rare grooves so obscure, the labels themselves no doubt forgot their very existence. The title may read "Atlantic & Warner," but the material in question actually originates from the myriad satellite labels operating just outside the mothership's purview -- major-label money funded these sides, but they never got the same promotional push afforded Warner Bros.' proven chartbusters. If anything, that makes this stuff even better than a lot of the Northern soul scores from small, backwoods labels, because these artists had the Warner studio muscle at their disposal -- meaning that even if the singles in question never cracked the charts, it wasn't for lack of spit and polish. Highlights this time out include the Soul Brother Six's "Thank You Baby for Loving Me," Wendy Rene's "Bar B Q," the Embers' "Where Did I Go Wrong?," and the Apollas' "Mr. Creator." ~ Jason Ankeny
