Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, who died in 1992 at the age of 81, possessed one of the most liquid voices to emerge from the Indian Hindustani tradition. It's perfectly suited to the three slow pieces in the vilambit teental rhythm cycle on Khayals. On "Hun To Tore Karan" he gets to demonstrate his remarkable art with small flights of improvisation that can be breathtaking, both in their quality and startling brevity. "Yamankalyan," from an evening raga, lulls with its gentle tones, and Mansur lulls with his tones, stretching out notes and phrases in a masterful fashion, emphasizing and lightly playing with the melody. The real showpiece, however, comes with "Jhan Jhan Jhan Paayal," where Mansur glides gorgeously between registers on the night raga, in addition to some remarkable phrasing. That he's a master is beyond dispute. And he makes this album an absolute joy of Hindustani vocal music. ~ Chris Nickson
