Though not a DJ mix but rather a straightforward compilation, All Access to Detroit's Music Festivals offers an excellent overview of Detroit's prolific techno scene circa 2001. This is a chance to hear some of Detroit's elder statesmen -- Richie Hawtin, Random Noise Generation, Black Odyssey (Stacey Pullen), Inner City (Kevin Saunderson), Dark Comedy (Kenny Larkin), and Shake -- along with a number of blossoming artists, most notably Ibex and Recloose. As a starting point for those curious about Detroit techno or as a sampler for casual fans, you probably won't find a better single-disc album on the market that can compare to this. Die-hard fans of this music may be disappointed to find that few of these tracks are exclusive to this album, but All Access isn't intended for them but rather the uninitiated. As such, the album was originally released exclusively in Detroit to coincide with the second annual Detroit Electronic Music Festival before later seeing an official release in early summer 2001. ~ Jason Birchmeier
