From its ironic title to the playful cover photo, Pete Seeger's 1966 release DANGEROUS SONGS!? openly mocked the folk singer's popular perception as a rabble-rousing socialist provocateur whose only aim was the destruction of the American way of life. If anything, the challenging tunes on this album seem to say that Seeger was a true patriot, one who spoke out against what he saw to be wrong with his country. From allegories like "John Brown's Body" and "Joe Hill's 'Casey Jones'," to plainspoken protests like "The Draft Dodger Rag" and "Walking Down Death Row," Seeger speaks his mind. He also makes room for the remarkably silly fireside favorite "Beans in My Ears" and a pair of musical treatments of Shakespeare's poetry, showing the range and depth that's Seeger's true gift. This reissue features new liner notes and three previously unreleased tracks, including an alternate take of "Joe Hill's 'Casey Jones'."
