Acclaimed Canadian jazz pianist Renee Rosnes achieves a difficult balancing act on this unique recording by melding the tight complexity of small post-bop ensemble with the power and intensity of a big band. As soloist, composer, and arranger, Rosnes fronts the 19-piece Danish Radio Big Band. The group is driven by a surging rhythm section, electric guitar, and fat layers of horns that at times blend to an impressionistic hush, and at others mount sonic blasts of great power. Through it all is Rosnes's piano playing, distinguished by her own stylistic and dynamically sensitive range--from the light-touch lyricism that introduces "In This Moment" to the sharp runs and aggressive swing phrasing of "Bulldog's Chicken Run." Most impressive, however, is the writing itself. Rosnes's compositions expand the palette of traditional hard bop to include work inclined toward space-giving third-stream ("The Quiet Earth"), shape-shifting rhythm experiments ("Lament"), and textured orchestral works reminiscent of late-period Ellington ("Early One Morning"). Given its superb writing, attention to stylistic breadth, and top-notch performances, RENEE ROSNES AND THE DANISH RADIO BIG BAND sets a new standard for large-ensemble jazz.
