This is a reissue of the wonderful joint debut recording that jazz vocalist Betty Carter and jazz pianist Ray Bryant made for Epic Records in 1955. The CD includes four fine tracks from 1956 that Carter recorded with a big band, arranged and conducted by saxophonist Gigi Gryce, that remained unreleased until 1980 when they appeared on a Carter compilation for Columbia Records entitled SOCIAL CALL.
Carter is one of jazz's most fiercely individual and innovative vocalists, drawing her inspiration from the bebop tradition of instrumentalists with her oddly syncopated phrases, her sudden bursts of scatted improvisations, and her curved and elongated notes. Ray Bryant's subtle and liquid piano accompaniments are a perfect foil for Carter's tasty eccentricities. Some highlights include an extremely sensual version of the great standard ballad "Moonlight in Vermont," and a cooking version of Jerome Kern's "Just the Way You Look Tonight," with some fine flute playing from Jerome Richardson. Together with Ray Bryant's boogie-woogie instrumental "Bryant's Folly," and his swinging instrumental version of the Nat Cole classic "No Moon At All," they make up a collection of jazz of the highest order.
