While listeners looking for something a little more manageable would probably be better off with Rhino's single-disc, 1992 compilation Pickin' Up the Pieces: The Best of Average White Band (1974-1980), as career overviews go, the Ultimate Collection certainly lives up to its title, despite boasting a "hit or miss" second half that fails to stack up against its more familiar, jam-packed opening set. ~ James Christopher Monger
