For most of the '90s, Tash rolled as one-third of the vastly underrated hip-hop troupe Tha Alkoholiks. As the decade slid to an end, he tried his hand at the soloist world with his debut release, RAPLIFE, a laudable melding of the spare sampling of the old school with more overstated modern soundscapes. RAPLIFE shifts from backdrops of Notorious B.I.G./Puffy to George Clinton to KC without so much as a wink, smoothly and naturally. Although he steps out on his own, like any respectable MC, he's not out there entirely alone. B-Real drops by to flow on the opening track, the tight "Ricochet" and cuts in throughout the album. Kurupt goes about his business dueting on "G'z Iz G'z." Raekwon is the guest on the almost sweet "The Game." Fellow Alkoholiks J-Ro and E-Swift tip back a few verses on the jerky "Only When I'm Drunk." However, Tash doesn't merely rest on other rappers' laurels; he can bring his own, as he does in style on "Nightfall." Though the lyrics certainly don't break any new ground (with abundant talk of "hoes" and "bud"), when combined with the relentless beats, they help make RAPLIFE an entertaining and captivating affair from start to funky finish.
