In the wake of rap-metal's enormous commercial success and the mainstream ascendancy of such artists as Limp Bizkit and Korn, it didn't take a marketing genius to deduce the potential in pairing acts from the worlds of hard rock and hip-hop. Certainly, it's been done before, as rappers from Onyx to Run-DMC have cast their lot in with tattooed, grizzled rockers in the past. LOUD ROCKS, however, makes that concept its theme, and runs with it all the way to the bank.
While the unrelenting approach of heavy rockers such as Sevendust and System Of A Down seems a likely bet to mesh nicely with the no-nonsense hip-hop stylings of Xzibit and Wu-Tang Clan respectively, it's the less likely rockers who provide some surprisingly rewarding moments here. Who would have guessed that pop-rock heartthrobs Sugar Ray, or old-school metal madman Ozzy Osbourne could collaborate so effectively with rap artists? Even if you're not a big fan of standard-issue rap-metal, there are enough unusual combinations and unexpected sonic results here to sustain interest.
