Is it post-rock? Is it electronica? Surprise! It's neither and both, a music of contradictions, a group defined by unpredictability, and a concept that dozens of others will fail to get, emulate, or surpass. A side-project from members of electronicists To Rococo Rot, Tarwater resembles a sonic architecture of pop and pistons weathered, crumbling, and finally reborn in the multimedia world of music, circa 2000.
Tarwater fuses electronics with rock frippery, much like antecedents Cluster and Neu, welding a motorik pulse to deceptively simple harmonies and morphing rhythmic structures. There's an air of Matisse about tracks such as the elegiac "Dauphin Sun" and "The Trees", their breezy guitar samples set amidst a electronics, and a Mouse on Mars-ian cache of intrigue on "At Low Frequency". It's all almost hummable-and eminently listenable.|
