A fascinating, if uneven collection for Chet Baker fans, this box set from the King Jazz label shows Baker in two important phases of his career. The first disc was from a recording made in 1966, in Pueblo, CO, when many people considered Baker to be in his prime. The second disc is from the end of his career, recorded in 1984, when many people had written him off as a junkie has-been (but when Baker was still making worthwhile recordings). Both make fine additions to the collections of Baker fans. Of somewhat more dubious worth is the tribute album, which is included with the other two discs. Dave Liebman is the central core of a group of musicians playing homage to Baker's legacy -- their music is pleasant, but pales in comparison to the real thing presented on the rest of this collection. ~ Stacia Proefrock
