As their name suggests, the Love-Birds have a lot to say about romantic relationships, but that's not to say they appear to be having good luck with them. The San Francisco band's first full-length album, 2018's In the Lover's Corner, is full of songs about the uphill battle of making things work with your significant other, though these guys have a refreshingly realistic perspective on such things -- they're as inclined to blame themselves as their partners, they sound less heartsick than quietly rueful with the state of their love lives, and there's an undercurrent of dry humor bobbing up and down in many of the songs. The Love-Birds have a fair amount to say lyrically, but it's their music that speaks most eloquently -- these guys have an impressive gift for coming up with melodic hooks, and they generate a fuzzy sort of jangle pop that's sincere but has just enough crunch to keep things from seeming too sweet. Guitarists Thomas Rubenstein and Eli Wald achieve an ideal balance between Byrds-ian chiming and garage rock snarl, and the rhythm section of Charlie Ertola on bass and Eli Groshelle on drums carry the songs with strength and style. The music on In the Lover's Corner sounds like up-to-date indie pop while tipping its hat to many of the stylistic tropes of vintage jangle pop, and the music feels sincere but not self-obsessed, energetic without seeming forced. In the Lover's Corner is a strong and refreshing exercise in pop-centric rock & roll, and anyone with a taste for modern-day power pop will fall hard for this. ~ Mark Deming
