Willfully primitive but strangely futuristic, Heartcore conjures the feeling that you're listening to a tribal storyteller spin warped fairy tales for vagabonds dispersed by a nuclear holocaust. Disjointed, booming percussion and expressive vocals--at times delicate as crystal or as harrowing as a banshee unhinged--mark the fractured experiments on WILDBIRDS AND PEACEDRUMS. "A Story from a Chair" is hushed and intimate, with chimes and cooed vocals; and "The Window" is practically a capella. There's a weird, dark power to noisier tracks ("Bird"), as if there's a storm coming, and only the crazy lady with the drums can feel it.
